Katie Neal - Music / Performing Arts

I attended The Kingsley Sixth Form from 2017-2019. I studied Music, Maths, French and Psychology during my time there, and was thrilled to walk away with 4 x As on A Level Results Day.

From there, I went on to study an Integrated Masters Degree in Music & Music Psychology at the University of Leeds. I adored my course at Leeds, as it was extremely varied and I was able to study so many areas of music, before finally specialising in music and wellbeing in my final year. Outside of my course, I really threw myself into the extracurricular music scene at the university, with particular highlights including playing drums for several musical theatre shows and being a regular presenter on Leeds Student Radio.

I was lucky enough to be at Kingsley from Nursery all the way through to Sixth Form, so I really got to experience the full Kingsley Journey. However, I particularly enjoyed my time in the Sixth Form as I was really able to dive deep into the subjects that I loved. People often remark that my A Level choices seemed vastly different, but I believe that they all involved equal measures of creativity, problem-solving and logic, and I went on to incorporate topics from all four subjects within my degree!

I owe a great deal of my passion for these subjects for the teachers that helped me explore them. For example, Mr Smith was definitely the reason I went on to study music at university, as he guided me through my musical education in way that made that made it both informative and extremely exciting. The small class sizes at the Kingsley Sixth Form really allowed me to thrive, especially within my one-to-one French lessons with Madame Mahé and Madame Connor. Mr Spillane and Dr Smith broke down all challenging mathematical concepts in a really accessible way, whilst Mrs Mace introduced me to a whole new subject, Psychology, which I fell in love with and it ended up inspiring my choice of course at Leeds!

I am extremely grateful to the Kingsley Sixth Form for how they helped me prepare for Higher Education. Mrs Morgan's guidance through the personal statement process was invaluable, and we received wonderful career advice from staff, alumni and at UCAS Fairs and other trips throughout the two years. I also received individualised support in preparation for university interviews, which really boosted my confidence.

Nowadays, I’m living my best life as a freelance musician & creative in Manchester. Predominately, I teach the drums to children and adults, alongside additional classes at an Alternative Provision in the city. I’m also taking steps to pursue my dream of working in radio as I am currently a presenter at Bolton FM and content assistant at Gaydio Manchester. Additionally, I produce my own podcast ‘Figuring It Out As I Go Along’, run well-being sessions with a music & mental health charity and play drums in an indie/pop/rock band called ‘Public House’. My weekly routine is hectic to say the least, but I’m so glad that i get to gain experience whilst having fun doing my favourite things! I am so thankful to Kingsley for allowing me to reach my full potential.

It is hard for me to name only a couple of my favourite memories from my time at Kingsley Sixth Form, but I will never forget my French Exchange Trip in Year 12, alongside the amazing Performing Arts opportunities like the the production of 'Into the Woods' in 2017 where I was lucky enough to play the Witch! I was also trusted with the position of Head Girl in my final year at Kingsley, and it was such a joy and an honour to be able to represent the school alongside the rest of the Sixth Form Leadership Team. All in all, however, I mainly just remember being excited to come to school everyday! I was able to develop wonderful relationships with both my peers and staff, and it always felt like a comfortable environment to learn in. I felt that I was encouraged to become the best that I can be, yet I was never afraid to take risks and make mistakes. The comforting community of the Kingsley Sixth Form is so special and I am so glad I got to experience it during such a pivotal time of my life.
