The support from the higher education staff and music teachers was invaluable when it came to pursuing my passions and making my university application… my music teachers encouraged academic discussions that transcended the curriculum, simultaneously fuelling my love of music and giving me crucial interview practice.
I’m currently a second-year music undergraduate at Downing College at Cambridge University, and I look back on my time at King’s with immense gratitude. The support from the higher education staff and music teachers was invaluable when it came to pursuing my passions and making my university applications: everyone was more than happy to give me feedback on several drafts of my personal statement until I finally had a version I was completely happy with, and my music teachers encouraged academic discussions that transcended the curriculum, simultaneously fuelling my love of music and giving me crucial interview practice.
More than anything, however, was the way in which all the staff seemed genuinely excited about my future as a musician: they inspired genuine enthusiasm, self-confidence and courage in my decision-making. Of course, the wonderfully rich musical environment and extra-curricular opportunities at King’s were brilliant in immersing me in as much music as possible and cultivating a love of this way of life; the opportunities at King’s and Warwick are unparalleled, and fully embracing them is crucial for anyone considering furthering their musicianship beyond school life.
I love life as a music student. The course is academically stimulating, allowing exploration into several areas of study. This year, I’m enjoying courses such as Music and Science, and Popular Music and Media, and composition. As a choral scholar in the Downing College Chapel Choir, I am privileged to be able to sing regular services and partake in the most incredible opportunities, such as a recent 10-day tour to New York and Vermont. This year, I’m also the president of the Downing College Music Society - I get to organise, run, and perform in all of the musical events and concerts within college. I’m so excited for my future as a musician and am so grateful to King’s High for the support I received in following this path.
Don’t just dream music; live it, breathe it, become it. Compose your path with your heart conducting the journey - be bold.
